Ceramic : Introduction

Ceramic stands for “made of clay and other materials, permanently hardened by heat”. It is the study or use ceramic products and raw materials. Diploma in Ceramic Technology is a 3 years long diploma certificate program. After passing 10th standard, students are eligible to pursue this program.

The term ‘ceramic’ comes from the Greek word meaning ‘pottery’ – these clay-based domestic wares, art objects and building products are familiar to us all – but pottery is just one part of the ceramic world.There is an increasing demand in our modern world to develop new materials with properties that fit certain requirements. As a result, a branch of science/engineering known as ‘materials science’ has evolved. It investigates the relationship between the structure of materials at the atomic or molecular level and their physical properties at the macroscopic level.

Ceramics is one of the areas of interest to a materials scientist and is the oldest branch of materials science. A ceramic is a non-metallic solid made up of either metal or non-metal compounds that have been heated and cooled. In general, they are hard, corrosion-resistant and brittle. ‘Ceramic’ comes from the Greek word meaning 'pottery’ – these clay-based domestic wares, art objects and building products are familiar to us all – but pottery is just one part of the ceramic world. Ceramics now includes advanced ceramics used in engineering and medicine.

Further studies and PG courses
After completing Diploma Ceramic Engineering program, one may go for Bachelor’s Degree (B.E./B.Tech.) in Ceramic Engineering. That is in out of state Engineering colleges like Rajastan, Kolkatta, and Karnataka. Also you can choose chemical engineering.
After that, one may go for Master’s education. M.E./M.Tech. program will enable one to specialize in disciplines within the Ceramic Technology or chemical Engineering sector. If you are interested in management program, you may go for MBA program!

Career prospects and job opportunities

Ceramic sector is has wide range of opportunities like Tiles, Sanitary ware, Glass, Cement, Electrical porcelain, Crockery ware etc... Due to this reason diverse job opportunities are available in front of Ceramic professionals.. This means that there is decent job availability for Ceramic professionals in India.

Some of the notable job profiles related to Ceramic field are-
--> Supervisor in manufacturing unit
--> Supervisor in Quality check/ Lab
--> Technician Marketing supervisor
--> Supervisor in R&D
