Introduction

Metallurgy is a domain of materials science and engineering that studies the physical and chemical behavior of metallic elements, their inter-metallic compounds, and their mixtures.

Metallurgy have future scope in PSU’s and MNC, Production industries, Consultancy and Evaluations, cryogenics, Materials and metallurgical R&D etc.

Some important curriculum covered under this program are- Physical Metallurgy, Extraction Metallurgy, Iron and Steel Production process, Corrosion Technology, Destructive and Non-destructive evaluation methods, Material science.

Higher Education Opportunities

After qualifying of Diploma in Metallurgy program, diploma students are eligible Bachelor’s Degree (B.E./ B.Tech.) in Metallurgy Engineering. In most Degree Engineering colleges, certain percentages of seats are reserved for Diploma certificate holders. This entry is known as the lateral entry. Diploma holders with good grade may make use of lateral entry and join B.E./ B.Tech.  Metallurgy engineering program’s 2nd academic year (directly). This way, Diploma holders may make the ‘D TO D’ switch and earn a Bachelor of Engineering/Technology Degree.

After graduation, bachelors are eligible to apply for competitive examinations, Post-Graduation, and fellowships. M.E. / M.Tech. Program will enable one to specialize in disciplines within the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering sector.

 Career prospects and job opportunities

The metallurgical field is extremely diverse and there are numerous employment opportunities available for metallurgists in every industry and enterprise that is into production, buying, selling or manufacturing of metals or metallic products. Metallurgists are also found in the R&D department of various industries and factory units. There is a great demand for metallurgy professionals in industries as the world today cannot function without the plentiful supply of metal and alloys. This is one of the reason that metallurgists command good salaries. Apart from this, they can find for relevant employment opportunities in Public Sector Units (PSUs). Top Recruiting firms for diploma Metallurgists are Iron & Steel Sectors, Production and fabrication industries, foundries and casting industries, R&D sections, Consultancies and Materials labs.

Pay Scale/Salary of Metallurgist

The salary offered to diploma metallurgists varies from industry to industry. The diploma metallurgists working with the aerospace industry earn more as compared to other industries. The annual salary for diploma metallurgists at the start of their career is between Rs. 2,15,000 to Rs. 4,75,000 (CTC).
